Who We Are
Friends of Halbert Park is a committee of Sunset Heights Civic Club which is a 501(c)(4) organization. We started this group to bring together members of the neighborhood to become stewards of the park and we want your help!
Sunset Heights Civic Club is a neighborhood, non-profit organization that represents those living between 20th Street, Yale Street, Interstate 610, and N. Main St. Learn more at sunsetheightshouston.com
Mission Statement:
Recognizing that Halbert Park is at the center of Sunset Heights and an important park in the Greater Heights area, we seek to improve the park in order to ensure that it is a safe, welcoming, useful, and beautiful space for the community. Working within the Sunset Heights Civic Club, and with community partners, we will plan events to bring neighbors together, develop plans for improvement, and raise and direct funds for those purposes.
Goals of Friends of Halbert Park:
An improved park that is functional, and beautiful for all who visit.
Adopt Halbert Park
The City of Houston has an Adopt-a-Park program that allows civic organizations to help provide long term maintenance and aesthetic improvements. We are working on applying for this designation which will help us with our larger goals.
Work with City Council
Our City Council representative has helped the neighborhood in the past get needed improvements and FOHB plans to continue that progress.
Raise Necessary Funds from the City, and the Community
The City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods provides matching grants up to $5,000 each year for those projects that qualify. We hope to apply and receive one in 2023, but the grant process requires significant fundraising to receive the full matching grant and be reimbursed. Additional amenities may also require community fundraising.
Host More Neighborhood Events
Sunset Heights Civic Club would like to start hosting more events in Halbert Park. Please join us and help make the park the best it can be!
