Update Fall 2023

The design phase is still underway and permitting is expected to begin in early 2024 according to Houston Parks and Recreation’s General Services Department. We will provide more updates on the project as soon as we have them.

Progress is being made on the new Sunset Heights Park formerly known as the Heights Transit Center located at 6000 North Main.

The Houston Parks & Recreation Department acquired the former Heights Transit Center, right down the street, and they've engaged Lauren Griffith & Associates to create a master plan for a new park. Lauren Griffith & Associates is quite an accomplished team. They've designed and created many wonderful projects around Houston such as Market Square Park, Discovery Green, Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza, and the Hermann Park trails to name just a few. Here's a link to their portfolio.

Decisions have been made!

Houston Parks & Rec. conducted a community survey accessing the interest for potential amenities and park activities for the new Sunset Heights Park. Here’s a downloadable PDF of the complete set of results. A public meeting was held this past October and Lauren Griffith & Associates presented the 3 concepts for the park, then a vote was taken and Option C was the winner. (See below.)

Key points from the meeting included:

The plans for the new park will:

  • Be fenced

  • Include a playground, tricycle track, water pad, flexible area (think Pilates and/or ping-pong and an inter-generational fitness area

  • Keep the existing structure and include it in the design but open the space underneath by removing the wind breaks to allow for movement and flow.

  • Keep the existing oaks and add some more

  • The bathroom in the kiosk will be used for special events

  • Plantings will include native perennials and grasses.
