Did you know, there's a direct correlation between trees and the health of a community?

Planting a tree is one of the easiest and most powerful things you can do to have a positive impact in our neighborhood and on the environment. Trees clean the air, prevent rainwater runoff, help you save energy, beautify our neighborhoods and even combat global warming, not to mention they provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity.

The Sunset Heights Civic Club is starting an initiative to plant more trees in our neighborhood and we started with 5 new trees at Habert Park! (See the slide show below.)

We plan to partner with Trees For Houston, a non-profit organization dedicated to planting, protecting, and promoting trees.

There are two ways to participate:

  1. Grab yourself a free tree or two at one of the Trees for Houston’s Giveaway events and use this planting guide for help with selection and placement.

  2. Neighborhood Tree Planting Program

Through the Neighborhood Tree Program, Trees for Houston will donate and deliver 30+ trees to our neighborhood! They require a neighborhood to have a need of at least 30 trees to be considered for this program and we think we can accommodate. We need your help building a list of possible spots with a focus on easements and right-of-ways (ROW).

We encourage you to look for places, in our neighborhood, that would benefit from new trees and reach out to those friends & neighbors who have space. Please, share this page with them. If you'd like to be included on the list for free trees; send us a quick email with the number of trees you'd like, your address, and the street/easement you'd like to have considered. We are currently working to procure a map of the underground utilities for our neighborhood. We’ll post it here for your reference as soon as we can.

Once we gather a list of 30+ ideal spots we can apply and make plans to plant. If you know anyone that is passionate about trees and would like to head up this initiative, please let us know!

Thanks to the initiative of one of our dedicated members; the City approved 5 the planting of 5 new trees at Halbert Park. We had a great time planting 3 Red Maples and 2 American Sycamores.
